Carson Whitley — Subs Revive

Subs Revive is a collection of pieces, largely made for my graduate thesis at Mills College.

Nu-Post-Happy-Hard-Grind-Glitch-Core for the concert hall.

Frantic, useless cries (can, will, or won’t) knife your ossicles (the malleus, the incus, the stapes) until (potentially) frivolous recording edicts drive (with remarkable haste) further regression into their (own, aging) home.

Speakers/subwoofers with good low-end reproduction are highly recommended, as there are many frequencies between 10 and 40Hz throughout.

A fixed-media piece that was originally for an eight-channel playback system. This is the stereo downmix.

Doctor Rosenzweig:

“Doctor Rosenzweig” is the first in a series of audio portraits exploring the unique characteristics of individuals and their interactions with others.

Nonaah In Order:

“Nonaah In Order” is a study in pure plunderphonics. The nine note main sequence of Roscoe Mitchell’s August 23rd, 1976 performance of “Nonaah” is rearranged to highlight the development of individual notes throughout the piece, rather than the entire phrase as a whole.

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9…etc.

now becomes

Dance choreographer Alyce Finwall and I have been collaborating on this piece since July of 2010. The piece has evolved quite a lot, the audio seeing many revisions over this period of time.

Evenfall:
An evening-length piece featuring eight powerful female dancers investigating femininity, identity, innocence and nakedness, through raw movement, improvisation and theater. Evenfall journeys through a dreamlike and ever-changing world of explosive movement. Where intimate emotions and surreal landscapes come to life.
