Encephalous will hold your hand if you’re afraid of venturing outside of your “guitar, bass, drum, vocals” bubble.
…and especially your “I hate digital, anything that has anything digital is crap” bubble. That “warmth” you speak of and think you hear is really just the degradation/inaccuracies of the ‘analog’ recording AND playback of the signal.
A rant / diatribe:
People prefer vinyl for the psychological effects caused by being able to hold a tangible object in his/her hands. And don’t forget the big piece of art to distract you from using your ears.
Those new vinyl records of yours – you know, the ones that have come out in the last ten years or so – I hate to break it to you, but chances are all of that audio has been converted back and forth from analog-to-digital-to-analog-to-digital a countless number of times (if it was even analog in the first place). Very few people record to tape these days, and even the ones that do have some rack-mounted digital effects that some sounds will be processed with (for example: most delays are digital (though I will say: actual tape delay is much more fun)). In order to do that, the “analog” signal must be converted to “digital” which is then converted back to “analog” before doing whatever else is going to be done to said signal.
That record you’re holding may have even stayed entirely in the digital domain until the record was pressed.
Most of the crying (yes, it’s crying) about analog being better tends to come from people who are less than competent at the use of computers (for audio production) and less than knowledgeable about the physical properties of sound in general.
…or they listen solely to metal that sounds like they sat a handheld tape recorder in the middle of the room while the band played, then played that back inside of a closed coffin while recording outside the coffin with another handheld tape recorder, then dubbed it to cassette five times so that the noise floor is now louder than the actual music. Because that’s “true”. That’s “kvlt”. That’s “metal”.
Sound is sound. It doesn’t matter how you translate the original signal into minute fluctuations of air pressure (and why are “minute” and “minute” the same?). This is nothing to be a snob about, because nothing is.
